Brandy vs. Monica: Why I can’t choose a “winner!”

Hey girlfriends!

Tonight’s the night, our childhood favorites will hit the scene for the latest, most anticipated Verzuz battle yet. We all wanna be down with our girls Miss Thang Mo and The Vocal Bible B, so for the past few days many of us have been takin’ it to our group chats, family dinners, and of course social media accounts to say who we think is going to “win.” I too, started out thinking about this as a battle and wanting to choose a winner, but is it really a battle?

All of the conversations about who should win, who has more hits, who has the better chops kinda made me wonder about us as black women and girlfriends. Why do we feel the need to be in constant competition with one another? We all know that Brandy and Monica have a very long history and have always been paired up against one another. But they never should’ve been…periodt!

Yes, I know this Superbowl of live streams is even called “Verzuz” which lends itself for us to ultimately want a winner at the end, but in this case I think we all win. It’s just too difficult to choose between the girls who became phenomenal women and gave us the soundtrack to many of our childhoods. I mean, who didn’t want to sing both parts in The Boy is Mine? Who didn’t want to be Brandy in the first black representation of Cinderella? And I’m sure there are soooo many of us who wanted to be Monica everytime we heard Missy scream out “NEW MONICA!”

This is only the second Verzuz that showcases the amazing talents of two beautiful brown skinned sistahs. Just like that message we all sent out and re-posted a while back, we need to support them, not tear them down, and pit them against one another. They are both AMAZING and have a bomb ass catalogue of songs that I’m sure some of us have forgotten about. So, let’s make sure we show up and show out in record numbers for them.

They’ve spent enough years “battling” and competing, now it’s just time for them to shine and show us what sisterhood looks like in the music industry. Don’t get it twisted, being a celebrity ain’t easy and they’ve both been through it all. So for tonight…no battles, no haters, and no losers…EVERYBODY WINS!

They will be streaming live from the historic Tyler Perry Studios, so tonight is about making history once again and showing the world why BLACK WOMEN ROCK! Be sure to come back tomorrow so we can re-cap, re-live, and re-store our love for melodic & soulful R&B music from our childhood favs.

See y’all at the show!

  1. I believe healthy competition is good as referenced in Beyoncé’s Flawless. Verzuz for me is just a moment…a game. It isn’t a reflection of their entire career but how they choose to share their catalogue and the songs matchup against each other. I love both and couldn’t call it in the beginning but after watching I think Brandy won Verzuz. They both win in life and it was a win for the culture.
