Moesha and Me!

Moesha is back y’all and so am I!

Just like the nostalgic 90’s shows we all love so much creeping in to save us from the agony of what has become of the year 2020, I’ve proclaimed it my time to shine too. I mean, why not right? Not to mention, but to absolutely mention, all of my friends who keep asking me “Dom, what’s up with your blog?” Here it is y’all! This first one is dedicated to me and Mo…Moesha.

We’re all basically stuck at home, working or not (cause that’s real too), trying to get through 2020 the best way we all know how. Drankin’, Netflixin’, and chillin’. Just when we thought Netflix had run out of content, they decided to throw us back to the 90’s with one of my favorite shows from my teen years, Moesha! Now I have to admit, I didn’t know how much I missed Mo until I started binging. Me, my wine, Moesha and the crew. I’m not done with all 6 seasons yet, but the deeper and deeper I fall into the Moesha conundrum I’m starting to discover some things that are a bit alarming about my beloved 90’s show.

Let’s start with Moesha’s attitude…I mean I loved Brandy as a young girl and still do as a full grown women, but damn Moesha was mean as hell to everybody. It left me with this question: Is she an asshole or severely depressed and angry at the world? Before you disagree, think about it…her mom died and her dad remarried a teacher from her high school. That’s weird as hell for a teenager. Okay, the next thing we need to discuss is how mean she was to Kim. Why Moesha writers, just why???

Moesha, the show, and I matured simultaneously. I was in middle school when the show premiered and about to graduate high school when it went off the air. So many of the topics they tackled were directly connected to what I thought I was experiencing as a teenager. But back to the friendships…realistically, I just don’t think with the way she treated her crew that they would’ve stuck around and put up with her with her stuff. She was selfish, narcissistic, and riding her high and mighty card hard. It just seems like now watching it as an adult that Mo thought she was better than the rest of them in the crew.

Let’s move on to brother Hakeem. First of all, where is his mama and his grandma? Why is Hakeem always over there ready to eat all meals of the day? As neighbors, should Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell go over there and see if everything is okay? LMAO…I just have so many questions about Hakeem. Meanwhile, he has the freshest gear and doesn’t seem to be bothered. He loves him some Moesha and is going to always be that neighbor best friend coming over for a hot meal and some family drama on the side. LOL

Okay, last one…Dee is way too damn nice to Mo. I know she’s trying to give her some time, but there is only so many times that you ‘re gonna be rude to me lil’ girl. LMAO. Frank, is too nice to his “pumpkin” too. He doesn’t correct or punish her much in season one, and little brother Miles points it out everytime! Even when she refused to take the paid for Saturn, talkin’ bout she tryna get her a jeep; girl bye! Either way, Mo needs a smooth tongue lashing or some serious counseling to get that attitude in check. At any rate, I do think some of the behaviors of the characters and situations wouldn’t fly in these times. *shoulder shrug* I’m still watching season 1, but I’ll be back with an update of my thoughts on Mo 2 da E 2 da…MOESHA. Enjoy being a teen again y’all!

Hit me up and let me know what y’all think too!

  1. Moesha can definitely come off as spoiled especially comparing her to other characters but I think they minimized the impact of her mother’s death at such a young age.
