Talk about it Tuesday: Are you down with the WAP?

Gather ’round girlfriends we have some things we need to talk about TUHDAY! “WAP,” nope not worship and praise, but “wet a** pu$$y.” Yep, that’s right it hasn’t even been out a full week and Cardi and Meg have done it again. They have given us a new women’s empowerment anthem, yeah I said it…empowerment! Now let’s be clear, while the song has many of us feeling strong and empowered about our bodies and owning our sexuality; there are too many conservatives to count (famous and not so famous) who are in an uproar about this new tune. Pick up your shovels and let’s dig a lil’ deeper into it.

I took it upon myself to do a little google searching before letting y’all know my thoughts about the anthem. OMG…that search had me on a merry-go-round of emotions. The main one being, anger. My unicorn (’cause of course I’d be on a unicorn right?) came to a screeching halt as I read the perplexing and offensive opinions from a Washington Post article. The white male journalist that I choose not to name said things about my good girlfriends like:

the video is “…hyper-sexualized”

“…the acronym title is too vulger to spell out” and

described the BAPS inspired outfits as “ostentatious animal print outfits, which leave very little to the imagination.” He even calls the video “outrageous.”

What really pissed me off is that he went on to mention the netflix series “Tiger King” and the outrage he felt about Cardi using real, live big cats. Now he isn’t the only one, there are many other animal rights activists who are focused on the big cats more than the message of the song. Now grab your shovels and let’s dig even deeper!

Here’s the thing, these white conservatives are chastising two beautiful women, one black and one latina, for taking back ownership of their bodies and sexuality from the misogynist male rap lyrics we’ve been blasting for years. Not to mention letting other women know, hey sis, it’s okay to be sexy and love sex too! If we allow men to rap, sing, and include “oversexualized” video girls in their videos about us, then hell we should be able to do it for ourselves too!!!!

A bit of background. The sample used for “WAP” is from a 1992 Baltimore club hit titled “Whores in this House” by Frank Ski and Al “T” McLaran. On Friday morning when I hit play on the mysterious “WAP” single, I immediately recognized the sample as something I remembered listening to in my younger days. As a DMV native, I knew I’d heard this song before. My google search proved me right and solidified my initial idea that Cardi and Meg took this male dominated, negative song and gave it a woman’s touch. I like to think of “WAP” as the new age Juvenile & Cash Money hit “Back That A$$ Up.” You know when you hear those strings, that beat drops, and Juvenile’s infamous whisper “Hot, hot…Cash money records takin’ over for the ’99 and the 2000’s” the spirit lifts you up and you can’t help but shake what yo’ mama gave ya! We have a new hit to shake it too girlfriends, one designed especially for us, by us.

I get it, no woman wants to be identified as a whore, but every lady has needs that must be met in the bedroom and should be 100% comfortable letting her partner know when, where, and how she wants things done. Okkuuurrr!

I have seen the house in the video referred to as the “whore house” and I can’t stand that. The women in this luxurious mansion with busty fountains spewing out crystal clear water from the nips are no man’s whore, they are beautiful representations of their culture and what Cardi has went on record stating “future super stars.” What I love most is that she took up and coming female rappers and put them on. That’s the break she had and now she’s reaching back to help a sista out with a come up.

So…to the naysayers, conservatives, big cat lovers, and especially to the men who rap and lust over women with bodies like Meg and Cardi everyday on the street, don’t get your panties all in a bunch; dig that wedgie out enjoy this ride. Matter of fact, go out and get you some WAP!
